The GLD provides a variety of services such as transportation, supply chain management, engineering, document processing, financial management, investigations, auctions and sales, records management and information technology support.

The GLD provides tailored solutions to support national security objectives within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). As part of this effort, it also supports both combatant commands and other military departments to develop their own logistics plans that are specifically designed for their mission requirements.

Key positions within the GLD include a Deputy Under Secretary for Logistics Enterprise Management who serves as the principal advisor for strategic planning; Directors for each functional area; Logistics Planning Executives; Program Managers; Budget Analysts; Acquisition Specialists; Asset Managers; Procurement Officers; Logisticians; Maintenance Technicians; Data Analysts; Information Technology Professionals; Security Specialists etc.

The GLD facilitates DoD's logistic needs by focusing on customer service excellence while leveraging private sector solutions wherever possible. It operates three primary areas — Analysis & Planning (A&P), Operations & Management (O&M), and Strategy & Policy (S&P). A&P helps customers develop plans that integrate resources across organizational boundaries while S&P develops policies and strategies to improve operational effectiveness in support of DoD's mission goals. O&M executes those plans through strategic sourcing initiatives and operations-focused contracts that deliver products or services in support of DoD objectives quickly, efficiently, and cost effectively.
