Working Principle

The AFSD process involves a rotating tool with a specially shaped pin and shoulder that traverses a substrate material. The pin generates frictional heat and plastically deforms the material, creating a softened zone. Simultaneously, the shoulder applies pressure, forcing the softened material to flow around the pin and bond with the substrate. By controlling the tool's motion and the deposition parameters, successive layers of material can be added to build up the desired structure.
