What does CSL mean in COMMUNITY

CSL stands for Community Supporting Lobstermen. We are a non-profit organization that supports the sustainability and profitability of Maine’s wildly caught lobster industry. Our mission is to provide resources, education, and connections to ensure the long-term economic viability of the lobstering community.

We believe that supporting and preserving the wild caught lobster industry begins with investing in our local fishing communities. We serve as a liaison between government agencies, industries, local fisheries, marine NGOs, research institutions, students and other stakeholders. The knowledge and resources we provide help bridge gaps between those who manage fisheries and those who live from them. From providing financial assistance to developing sustainable management practices, our work helps ensure the health of Maine’s wild caught lobster for generations to come.

CSL provides a variety of services designed to support Maine's lobster industry including financial assistance for lobstermen and their families; educational opportunities in sustainable harvesting techniques; policy advocacy on issues related to fishery sustainability; scientific research collaborations; data collection efforts; outreach events throughout the state; and marketing efforts showcasing Maine's lobstering community.

No, all of our services are free of charge!

CSL is led by an experienced Board of Directors comprised of members from both within and outside of the lobster industry. Our Board includes fishermen from many different ports around Maine, along with representatives from local businesses, academia, government regulatory agencies, finance professionals, attorneys and non-profits working on ocean conservation projects within the state. Together they establish short-term goals and long-term strategies while overseeing organizational operations on a daily basis.

Yes! We deeply appreciate donations in any amount – large or small – because they allow us to continue providing much needed resources and support to our local fishing communities in a responsible way! All donations received are tax deductible as allowed by law as we are recognized by other federal governments as an eligible charity organization (IRS EIN# 83-3722143). Donations can be made online through our website or checks can be sent directly to our office address provided here on this page (contact us).

Yes! Currently we have two grant programs available for applicants– the Small Business Assistance Grant Program which offers grants up to $15K/year per business along with opportunities for microfinancing loans up to $25K/business; And secondly we have our Local Fisheries Support Grant Program which awards grants up to $10k/year per applicant working within fisheries around the state of Maine. Additionally we offer scholarships each year for high school seniors going into postsecondary studies focused on Marine Sciences or Fisheries Management OR incoming freshman who are continuing their studies at Colby College or University of Maine Machias (or select satellite campuses). One way is through volunteering in an administrative capacity at one of our regional offices located throughout New England states such as Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island etc..
