What does AFG mean in UNCLASSIFIED

An AFG stands for Assistance to Firefighters Grant. It is a grant program that provides funding directly to local fire departments and Emergency Medical Services Organizations (EMS) for critically needed resources.

Eligibility for the Assistance to Firefighters Grants may include state and local firefighting organizations such as all career, volunteer, combination, and Native American tribal fire departments; nonaffiliated EMS organizations; State or local government entities or authorities that oversee or manage fire prevention or suppression activities; or other organizations whose primary purpose is providing rescue, firefighting or emergency medical services.

Funds are allocated based on criteria established by Congress within the legislation authorizing the program including population served and severity of need. Each year Congress appropriates funding specific to each of these areas. Funds can be used in two categories - operations & safety- and vehicles/equipment.

To apply for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant you must fill out an online application on www.grants.gov. Applications open at the beginning of June each year and close approximately 90 days later depending on available funds. Applicants should refer to the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) published annually for specific instructions regarding eligibility requirements.
