History

The Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad (GHH) was established in 1877 by a group of investors headed by Colonel M.D. Kline. Their goal was to build a railway that connected their three eponymous cities – Galveston, Houston and Henderson – together, creating an efficient route for shipping between them. For nearly a century after its establishment, the GHH served as an important element in commerce within its region as it transported vast amounts of raw materials from industry to other parts of the state. In 1971, after 94 years of operation as an independent railroad company, GHH became part of a larger regional network known as Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR). To this day the UPRR operates many routes along the line which were once run solely by GHH.

Operations

Operations on the line began in June 1878 when passenger service began between Galveston and Houston with four round trips carried out daily each way. Freight operations began shortly thereafter in July 1878 with three round trips per day being ran from Hutchinson Junction to both Houston and West Columbia Junction respectively (Henderson not yet having been connected until later). Over time additional stations sprang up along the route bringing more passengers onboard while freight growth skyrocketed thanks to its new access to multiple ports along its route including those present at Galveston Bay & Sabine Pass waterside locations.
