AITMA was established in 1989 by Grandmaster Chai Sirisute, a renowned practitioner and instructor of Muay Boran (an ancient form of Thai boxing). Grandmaster Chai is credited with developing modern Muay Thai kickboxing in the United States during the 1970s. He saw a need to preserve the heritage of traditional martial arts in Thailand and formed AITMA as part of this mission.
