The exact cause of GERD is not known, but it is believed to be related to a malfunctioning lower esophageal sphincter (LES) that does not close properly after food passes through it. Other factors that may contribute to GERD include injury to the LES caused by certain medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen, pregnancy, alcohol consumption, smoking, eating high-fat meals, eating large meals just before bedtime, being overweight or obese and having a hiatal hernia.

Common symptoms of GERD include heartburn (a burning sensation in the chest), regurgitation (the feeling of acidic fluid coming up your throat), difficulty swallowing and occasional chest pain. Other less common symptoms may include nausea and vomiting due to irritation in the esophagus caused by the acid reflux.

Diagnosing GERD involves ruling out other possible causes for your symptoms first. Your doctor may order tests such as an upper endoscopy or barium swallow x-rayto look for any physical damage in your esophagus or gastrointestinal tract that may be an indication of acid reflux or another condition causing your symptoms.

Treatment for GERD involves lifestyle changes such as avoiding trigger foods that worsen your symptoms and eating smaller meals earlier in the day rather than later at night. Additionally, medications like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine H2 blockers can help reduce acid production in your stomach which helps alleviate some of your uncomfortable symptoms associated with gerd. Surgery may also be required if medications are not managing your condition adequately enough.
