Jim Cooper is a former Member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Tennessee's 5th district from 1983 to 2021. Before entering politics, he was a businessman and lawyer.

During Congressman Jim Cooper's time in the House of Representatives, he served on multiple committees including Veterans' Affairs, Budget, and Ways and Means. He also served as Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Health for 17 years and was the primary sponsor of over 200 bills related to health care, veterans, taxes, and infrastructure.

As announced by Congressman Cooper in 2020, after 38 years in public service he chose not to run for re-election so that he can spend more time with his family. Additionally, he plans to continue advocating for policies that will benefit his constituents in other ways.

During Congressman Cooper's tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, one major accomplishment was working with both Republicans and Democrats on legislation for much needed healthcare reform which resulted in several pieces of legislation being enacted into law during his tenure there. This includes funding for research initiatives such as Alzheimer's disease breakthroughs as well as medical treatments for veterans diagnosed with PTSD or traumatic brain injuries.

Prior to running for Congress, Jim Cooper was a successful businessman who owned a local radio station and also served as president of an advertising firm called Publici Communications Group Incorporated (PCGI). He also volunteered at many grassroots organizations throughout Nashville dedicated to helping those less fortunate than him such as Habitat For Humanity and Volunteer Ambulance Corps Incorporated (VACI).

Before Congressman Cooper entered into politics he attended Vanderbilt Law School where he earned his Juris Doctorate degree then went on to practice law at Stokes Bartholomew Evans & Petree until 1983 when he first ran for congress. In addition to practicing law, he also served on two corporate boards as well as wrote books about business ethics titled "The Hippocratic Oath" and "The Ethics Of Business Management".

Throughout his career Congressional Representative Jim cooper had been an advocate for numerous initiatives such as health care reform initiatives; renewable energy sources; infrastructure improvements; improved quality education programs and expanding educational opportunity; enhancing small business growth opportunities; human rights issues both domestically and internationally; increased access to affordable housing; strong environmental protection laws; protections from predatory lending practices; protecting civil liberties at home and abroad.
