What does BASH mean in UNCLASSIFIED

Large birds have the potential to cause serious damage. Bird strikes can produce dents, tears, and holes in an aircraft's structural components, leading to reduced aerodynamic efficiency and decreased safety levels. Smaller birds may not cause significant damage but still pose a safety hazard inside the cockpit due to distraction or interference with critical instruments.

BASH management programs involve identifying potential bird hazards in areas near airports, executing proactive steps to reduce or eliminate those hazards whenever possible, as well as preparing for incidents should they occur. Such proactive strategies include population control strategies such as habitat modification or culling, bird deterrents such as loud noises or balloons, and other steps designed to make flying safer for everyone.

Generally speaking, it is up to airport administrators and air navigation services providers (ANSPs) to develop their own BASH management plans by assessing local bird threats, determining corrective measures needed, creating an implementation plan, training staff involved in its execution and monitoring progress after implementation.

If a pilot suspects that a strike has occurred during flight then they must report this according to their own internal procedures which will vary from airline to airline. In addition if any physical evidence is discovered then this must also be reported via national reporting systems such as ARMS (Aviation Safety Reporting System) or The International Council on Bird Strike Prevention (ICBSP).

Pilots have a responsibility when it comes identifying potential bird-related danger before it leads to an incident. This includes recognizing warning signs like large flocks of birds near the runway during takeoff & landing operations as well staying vigilant while airborne & avoiding any known hazardous areas identified by air traffic controllers prior flight take off & landings.
