UAWO stands for United African Women Organization, which is a Pan-African organization committed to advancing the rights of African women and promoting gender equality in all aspects of life. Founded in 2005 in Johannesburg South Africa by nine pioneering women leaders from seven African countries – Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Ethiopia, Ghana Kenya Mozambique Namibia Uganda Zambia – UAWO has since grown into a vibrant network of over 800 grassroots organizations across 28 countries. The organization also partners with leading international institutions such as the World Bank Group, the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality (UN Women)and USAID. As a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) affiliated with the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), UAWO’s mission focuses on creating advocacy strategies that protect and promote gender equity on regional scales as well as strengthening local knowledge systems that support rural development plans led by community members themselves.
